This international event went completely vegan

Dear Vegan Leader,

We spoke with Alessandro Vozza, one of the organizers of Kubernetes Community Days Amsterdam 2023.  This prominent cloud technology event went fully vegan for the first time in 2023 (with 500+ attendees). Our team wanted to get insights about this major milestone.

According to Alessandro, the organizers aligned easily on the food choice and other ethical considerations. The event was governed by two principles:

No animals need to die for us to get together to talk about Kubernetes. It won’t kill you not to eat meat for 2 days.

The "vegan by default" catering made the event more inclusive and intriguing while reducing food waste.  A vegan café supplied breakfasts, lunches and dinners and smoothies, with a very well received indulgent vegan BBQ finale! Having explained the reason for vegan catering at the start of the event, the organizers heard very little negative feedback and lots of positive comments.

The organizers also made other responsible environmental choices during planning. In lieu of giving tag bags or other material gifts to attendees trees were planted in recognition of each speaker’s contribution, in collaboration with Tree Nation

What is the advice from Alessandro to those who organize or host events?  “Consider the power of your choices. You don't need things that will harm the environment or cause animals to die to enjoy all the benefits from fun, successful, and engaged events." The team will continue to make future events vegan, ethical, inclusive and carbon neutral.

Have you heard of other events, in your workplace or area, that went vegan by default?  Submit it on our Success Stories catalog page.
